Utah would not be as fun if I didn't have my family here. Don't get me wrong, Utah is an amazing state and there is so much to do, but it is so much better because I'm just a short drive away from so many different family members! I feel so lucky to be surrounded by siblings, cousins, in-laws, and aunts and uncles who all love to spend time with each other.
Memorial Day Weekend we decided to have a big cousin weekend. I have a cousin who gets so passionate about family time and it is the best! He planned a huge Cousin Camping trip at Currant Creek Reservoir and did not leave out a single detail. He had about ten extra sleeping bags and pads, enough tents for everybody, two huge gas space heaters, planned the meals and activities, and if I'm being honest, planned everything else as well. There were even backup plans to the backup plan if the weather was too unbearable,.. that's how prepared he was.
Lucky for us, we had Mike, and were super prepared for the weather that was a little less than ideal. After that first night sleeping we woke up to snow on the ground, yes snow! We were at 8,000 ft so I guess that makes sense, but still snow! In May! The following days it rained, but the fun thing about my family is that we never let it get us down! We just made the best of the situation and took advantage of the sun when it was out, and then played games under a car port tent when it rained. It was perfect.
One of my favorite parts of the weekend was the food. Tinfoil dinners, omelettes, taco salad, mountain man breakfast, s'mores, and last but definitely not least RIBS. Yes, we ate ribs while camping and they were the best ribs I've ever had!! Maybe it was because they were cooked on hot coals, but man those ribs were perfect. Ok, besides the delicious food I really just loved being away from the city and out in nature where nobody had cell service. Nobody had the chance to check instagram or facebook and that just made the weekend so much more peaceful. On Sunday we went on a gorgeous hike and had a testimony meeting at the top. It was so nice to feel the sweet spirit from my cousin's kids when they bore their testimonies and to listen to those testimonies of family members that we may have never heard before because we all attend different wards. It was a special Sabbath and really brought us closer together as a family.
The weekend ended on a high note when the sun came out and we were finally able to go canoeing. We raced in the canoes, fished, and enjoyed our last few hours before we had to head back home. I'm so glad we got to get to know each other on a whole new level this weekend, thanks for planning the trip Mike and Jess!
